Dr. Millicent Eidson

Dr. Debbie retired as the NYSDOH state public health veterinarian in 1996 and I took that position in 1997. So we never had the opportunity to work side-by-side in NYS. However, he always remained thoughtful, kind, and helpful as a retired consultant in my early years here in NY. When working on vaccination programs in the Adirondacks, I loved having the excuse to visit him and his family at their beautiful home in Saranac Lake, including the boat rides on Lake Flower! Many of my work interactions with Jack were before I came to NY, when I was a veterinary EIS officer at CDC and then as New Mexico’s State Public Health Veterinarian. I got to work on issues with him through many annual NASPHV and AVMA meetings, and if my memory serves me right, I believe we were both on the Rabies Compendium committee at the same time. During EIS, I contemplated many subsequent career paths, including academia or the federal government. However, I was so impressed with the dedication, knowledge, and savvy of that original cadre of state public health veterinarians that I went down that path myself. Jack Debbie was one of them, along with others like Irish Satalowich, John Emerson, John Freeman, and Suzanne Jenkins, who made developing NASPHV compendia one of the most stimulating and rewarding experiences of my career. I will miss him, and I appreciate all those who continue to follow in his footsteps through state public health veterinary service.
