Condolence: Dear Eileen and family

We were so shocked to hear the sad news. Ian was fun to be with and a great scientist. I always felt proud to say my friend Ian was a distinguished professor in his field. His talents didn’t stop there either. During our Paddington College days, we took a break from scientific study to make a silent film, written and directed by Ian. He also took the role of Count Splatula, who preyed on women (my character in particular), who were foolish enough to walk alone in the forest (aka the old part of Highgate Cemetery). Tass played my friend who raised the alarm, whilst Brian’s character, Detective Shift, pursued the dastardly Count Splatula. Sadly, we were never able to obtain a copy of the film from the college.

We spent many a college day lunchtime at the Wheatsheaf pub, where Ian would order a pint of “short death” or “gong gife” – his terms for Long Life – a beer that was widely available back then. In retrospect, his silly words are poignant and ironic.

He was always making us laugh, although once the tables were turned. I remember us stifling giggles as he tried to dodge the unwelcome advances of one drunken student, whose name escapes me now.

Brian (de Souza) when he heard the sad news, wrote: ‘Cannot forget those good days at college. ……….He was a brilliant scientist whose contribution to TB research will never be forgotten.’

So long, Ian, you clever, funny guy. You left this planet much too early. May you rest in peace.

Nicci (Yianni) Iacovou (Ian always called me by my surname - Yianni, even after I was married).

The Parting Glass - Irish Traditional

Oh all the time that e'er I spent,
I spent it in good company;
And any harm that e'er I've done,
I trust it was to none but me;
May those I've loved through all the years
Have memories now they'll e'er recall;
So fill me to the parting glass,
Goodnight, and joy be with you all.

Oh all the comrades that e'er I had,
Are sorry for my going away;
And all the loved ones that e'er I had
Would wish me one more day to stay.
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should leave and you should not,
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call

Goodnight, and joy be with you all.
Of all good times that e'er we shared,
I leave to you fond memory;
And for all the friendship that e'er we had
I ask you to remember me;
And when you sit and stories tell,
I'll be with you and help recall;
So fill to me the parting glass,
God bless, and joy be with you all.

Condolence: So unexpected and far too soon … Our hearts go out to you, Eileen, and your sons!
Ian gave me the opportunity of a lifetime to come and work at CSU, which I will always be grateful for. He was quite the character, and I’ll always have the fond memories from our work and our trips together, all over the world …

Condolence: Eileen and Family
WE will truly miss Ian.
I find it difficult to put into words how we feel, but we have always enjoyed his company, his humor and stories. and of course the parties!
Periodically he would show up just to say Hello, talk for a few then continue in to where he was going. WE will miss that.
Love to you and your boys. 💞
Julio and Me.

Condolence: I admit that Ian was a little scary to me at first, a staffer in a new job. But in rather short order I learned that he was funny, and kind, and cared deeply about both his work, those that he worked with, and his students. One of my first encounters with Ian was to ask him if he would talk to the student science club at Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins. He asked where this would be, and I responded "on the grounds of the high school" (basically saying that he needed to go there, as opposed to having them come to him). His response still makes me smile: "on the grounds! Am I supposed to do this in the parking lot!" Vintage Ian. During the last time that I saw him, he was grumbling about a problem that we were having on the first floor of the micro building (where we both had an office). He told me that the situation was "untenable" and suggested that I go home. He then called the Dean of the college, and within 30 minutes someone had arrived to fix the problem. That's the kind of effect that he had on people. He was a man who always did what he thought was right, lived exactly as he wished, and helped an awful lot of people. RIP, friend.
