Martha Adeline (Tyler) John, 88, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday June 13, 2018, after a long bout with Alzheimer's.

She was born April 22, 1930 in Saranac Lake, NY. The daughter of Albert and Helen Tyler of Vermontville, she was active in the Vermontville Church of the Nazarene and attended Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, MA, after graduating from Saranac Lake High School in 1947. She received a B.S in Education in 1951 and taught grade school in Kansas City, MO for one year. She returned to Vermontville and married Floyd I. John in August, 1952.

Martha and Floyd began working together as they attended graduate schools and raised a family. Martha worked while Floyd received a Master's degree in 1953. Their first son, Floyd, was born in November, 1953, in Gary, IN. Floyd was drafted in the Army in 1954 and a second son, Bruce, was born in 1955. In 1956 they went to Purdue University where Martha received a Master's degree and Floyd completed a doctorate and taught at Purdue. A third son, David, was born there in 1961.

Her busy professional career was highlighted by visits to over 50 countries. She and her family lived in Europe one academic year and travelled extensively. They saw the Berlin Wall, the Passion Play at Oberamagau, and visited a dozen countries. They went to the Holy Land, Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus, and Greece.

She was a Fulbright Professor in Botswana and Dean of the School of Education and Human Services at Marymount University where she was awarded an endowed Chair. She remained there until being appointed Vice-¬Chancellor of Africa Nazarene University in Nairobi, Kenya.

Martha loved her farm home, especially in the summer when she picked blueberries, went fishing with her family, and planted beautiful flowers.

She was predeceased by Albert and Helen Tyler and her sister Phyllis Tyler.

She is survived by her husband, Floyd, three sons, eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A memorial service will take place at a later date to be announced. Burial will take place in Union Cemetery in Vermontville.
