Obituary for Arthur F. "Art" Niederbuhl

Arthur F. "Art" Niederbuhl
Arthur F. Niederbuhl, age 92, of Bloomingdale, died Wednesday, January 10, 2018.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on October 21, 1925, he was the son of Arthur and Clara (Olsen) Niederbuhl. Arthur married Norma Curran on July 5, 1948 in Bloomingdale. She predeceased him on January 6, 2015.

When he was a young child, Art’s family moved to Saranac Lake, where his father cured from Tuberculosis. He graduated from Saranac Lake High School and later attended St. Lawrence University and the Tuck-Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, attaining a master’s degree. Art is a veteran of the United States Navy, serving active duty during World War II from 1943 to 1946 and remaining in the Naval Reserve until 1961. Two years ago, he took an honor flight to Washington DC with other veterans, an experience he greatly enjoyed.

Art, along with his wife Norma, owned and operated Norman’s Wholesale Grocery, which was founded in 1904 by his grandfather-in-law, M.B. Norman and carried on by his wife's parents. He was also a teacher at St. Pius X High School, where he taught advanced math and once said that teaching at Pius was one of the most fulfilling things he did in his adult life.

Art was very active in the community and served as President of the Board of Directors for the Saranac Lake General Hospital, (now Adirondack Health) and the Saranac Lake Federal Savings and Loan, (now Adirondack Bank).

Art was inducted into the Saranac Lake High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a gifted pianist, who played professionally as a young man. Throughout his adult life, he enjoyed hunting and fishing (a life-long member of the East Branch Rod and Gun Club), golfing, playing bridge and poker, family gatherings and eating out with friends. In any activity, he was a wonderful companion.

He is survived by his six children: John Niederbuhl and wife Carol of Bloomingdale, NY; Claire Skidmore and husband James of Chalfont, PA; Arthur S. Niederbuhl and wife Thelma of Bloomingdale, NY; Casey Miller and husband Kris of Markham, ON; David Niederbuhl and wife Robin of Amherst, NY; Margaret Lynch and husband Joseph of North Andover, MA; twenty grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Art is preceded in death by his parents and one infant son Matthew in 1955.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM. A graveside service will take place at St. Paul’s Cemetery in the spring.
