Jane C. Harris, age 83, of Ray Brook, died peacefully at her home on Monday, September 19, 2016. The cause of death was cancer.

Born in Waterford, New York on January 31, 1933, she was the daughter of Frederick and Mary (Clancy) Newland.

Jane graduated from the Samaritan School of Nursing and married Ronald Harris on January 28, 1956 in Troy. They lived in New Mexico for two years while Ron served in the United State Air Force, two years in California and then returned to
Eastern Massachusetts where they raised their family together. Although Jane worked as a private office nurse and a school nurse for several years, she enjoyed raising her five children the most. She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepard in Massachusetts.

Jane and her husband retired to Saranac Lake in 1995. She was a member and very active volunteer at the Church of St. Luke the Beloved Physician where she served on the St. Luke's Lunch Box, Budget Box and the Ladies Guild. Jane enjoyed square dancing, painting, knitting, gardening, playing the piano and her time with Paint and Palette. She especially loved to travel with her husband and was a lifelong camper, paddler and skier.

She is survived by her husband Ronald Harris of Ray Brook, one son, Roger (Fiona) Harris of Waltham, VT; four daughters Kate (Rick) Slattery of Bethel, ME, Carol (Bob) Doran of Weybridge, VT, Joanne (Doug) Delaney of Fairfax, VT, Maureen (John) Griffin of Londonderry, NH; three sisters Joyce (Ron) Castro of Vacaville, CA, Doris (Bill) Reuter of Sun City, FL and Dorothy Misenheimer (John) of Ft. Laudervale, FL; one sister-in-law, Vivian (Ernie) Melin of Peru, NY, 11 grandchildren and 13 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother. Jane is remembered by her children and grandchildren as strong, loving, compassionate and always there for them.

Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 4 PM – 7 PM. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday September 23, 2016 at the Church of St. Luke the Beloved Physician, with The Rev. Ann S. Gaillard officiating.
